Notes on Isaiah 31

(Isa 31:1 KJV) Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!

We see here a return to the warning part of prophecy. This was a warning to those who trust in Egypt for help. Their trust was in Egypt, abundance of horses and vehicles, not in the Lord.

Sometimes people are so quick to blame God when bad happens but never seek Him for guidance and counsel. Israel had knowledge of God and had His word. They did not seek His guidance and sought to get help from foreign countries. They gloried in great armies and the strength of man instead of trusting in God.

(Isa 31:2 KJV) Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words: but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of them that work iniquity.

This was true then and is still true. Evil workers will not always prevail. Their strength is only temporary.

(Isa 31:3 KJV) Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is holpen shall fall down, and they all shall fail together.

This we all need to remember. Egyptians were only men not God. Horses were not spirits. God is everlasting and a sure thing. Men fail, material things pass away but the God is forever.

They were looking at the many numbers of chariots and horses of the Egyptians, thinking surely with all that they would be safe; not so. Israel many times turned to outside help only to find that outside help turn on them in the end. God was their only sure help. The times it seemed that God was not there to help probably meant that sin was separating them from God. God wants to help and send salvation but our unbelief, our sin and our lack of acknowledging Him cuts off His blessings. Sometimes we may temporarily feel cut off because of trials and temptations but that is just a temporary trying of our faith. Many times we have trouble though because we have gotten away from Him and became so busy that our prayer life is almost dead. When we do not seek Him, He can't possibly guide us in the right direction and we begin to make mistakes and trust in the wrong things. We then get into trouble and wonder why God allows it to happen.

He does not force us to serve Him. If we insist on our own way and doing our own thing, we will be able to do so but with hazardous results. I realize that sometimes bad happens through no fault of our own. What I am talking about here is bad happening because of our own mistakes and then we question God’s care because of it or we blame God.

(Isa 31:4 KJV) For thus hath the LORD spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of them: so shall the LORD of hosts come down to fight for mount Zion, and for the hill thereof.

As birds flying, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it.

Again the prophet turns back to predicting the help that comes from God. God will always defend Jerusalem. Jerusalem has an eternal purpose and call of God.

(Isa 31:6 KJV) Turn ye unto him from whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted.

7 For in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made unto you for a sin.

8 Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be discomfited.

9 And he shall pass over to his strong hold for fear, and his princes shall be afraid of the ensign, saith the LORD, whose fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem.

Here is a call to return to the Lord from which they had forsaken. One day they will cast away their gold, silver and idols. The oppressing Assyrian shall fall. This had a partial fulfillment when Assyria fell but it also may have a latter day fulfillment when those enemies that surround Jerusalem and desire to take over that city shall be cut off by the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ and His armies from heaven. Many believe the Assyrian mentioned here could very well be the antichrist or deceiver who is to come in his own name sitting in the temple of God claiming to either represent God or take the place of God.

Notes on Isaiah 32

32:1 Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.

2 And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

3 And the eyes of them that see shall not be dim, and the ears of them that hear shall hearken.

4 The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly.

5 The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful.

6 For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practice hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.

7 The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right.

8 But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.

9 Rise up, ye women that are at ease; hear my voice, ye careless daughters; give ear unto my speech.

10 Many days and years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women: for the vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come.

11 Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones: strip you, and make you bare, and gird sackcloth upon your loins.

12 They shall lament for the teats, for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine.

13 Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; yea, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city:

14 Because the palaces shall be forsaken; the multitude of the city shall be left; the forts and towers shall be for dens for ever, a joy of wild asses, a pasture of flocks;

15 Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.

16 Then judgment shall dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness remain in the fruitful field.

17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

18 And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;

19 When it shall hail, coming down on the forest; and the city shall be low in a low place.

20 Blessed are ye that sow beside all waters, that send forth thither the feet of the ox and the ass.

(Isa 32:1 KJV) Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.

This chapter starts out with a king that reigns in righteousness. This could very well be the future reign of Jesus Christ who will rule the earth with righteousness. He will rule by the Holy Spirit of God and not in the weakness of men. Nothing will be hidden from Him who knows all things. All will dwell safely and the earth will be at peace. Those that rule under Him will be fair, just and honest. No dirty politics and deception. Oh how I long for that day. I'm so tired of politics, lies, deceit, filth, cheating, overtaxing, evil speaking, and dishonesty. We have laws now that can take away the land of the elderly that gets so they cannot pay taxes anymore. They pay taxes all their lives and support the schools and when they fall into hard times and cannot pay the property taxes any more their land can be confiscated. The government even makes it seem like it’s the fault of the people for being delinquent. In reality it’s the fault of the government for making such unfair laws that oppress the poor. This will not be under the reign of Christ. Everything will be fair and impartial.

Princes ruling in righteousness no doubt refers to resurrected saints who will reign and rule along with Christ.

(Isa 32:3 KJV) And the eyes of them that see shall not be dim, and the ears of them that hear shall hearken.

I believe that verse 3 will occur to all both spiritually and physically. There will be healing physically. Jesus demonstrated that when He walked on the earth and went about healing the sick. Eyes were opened and ears were healed. I believe this also pertains to spiritual healing as well. We will begin to understand the truth and seek the Lord. Spiritual darkness shall vanish.

(Isa 32:5 KJV) The vile person shall be no more called liberal, nor the churl said to be bountiful.

The vile person and churl: Evil churlish persons will not be called liberal or generous. They will be exposed for who they really are. No evil will be hidden. No sins will be covered. Everything will be out in the open. There will be no deception.

(Isa 32:10 KJV) Many days and years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women: for the vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come.

The days before the coming rule of Christ will be troublesome and cruel. Judgment will be poured out. Until the spirit be poured out from the Lord: The Sprit will be poured out over Israel. Right now they are in darkness because they do not believe in the Lord Jesus nor recognize Him as savior. This will change after the tribulation period. Their eyes shall see and their ears shall hear. They will receive understanding and repent as a nation. After this the Spirit of God will be poured out among them. After they receive the fullness of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit they will be restored to being a blessing to the whole earth. They will be fruitful and abound.

God is not through dealing with the nation of Israel. His promise to Abraham will take place unhindered.

We who believe in Jesus can have a part in the new reign of Christ by coming to Him by faith now and partaking of His righteousness. We must recognize that we can never be righteous ourselves. None of our good works will amount to anything apart from Christ. We must repent of sins and receive the righteousness of Jesus Christ. He was the only one to live without sin and the only one whose death can count for a payment for sin because He did not sin Himself. He was innocent of any sin and did not deserve to die. His death can now count for us. Now we who deserve the sentence of death do not have to pay for our own sins if we believe and accept what Jesus did on our behalf. By faith we are saved. It’s not good deeds that take us to heaven and make us to be able to partake in the coming kingdom. It is faith in Christ and then we work to glorify Him and tell others of this great plan of salvation offered to the whole world but received by so very few.
