Walking with God

What does it mean to walk with God? Can we possibly walk with God today? Have there been many in the past who walked with God?

Examples of those who walked with God

Enoch

22 And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:

24 And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

As a result of Enoch's obedience and determination to walk with God, he was appointed to enter heaven without physical death. Some have believed that Enoch will die in the future as one of the two witnesses mentioned in the book of Revelation who are killed by the beast and then resurrected three days later.

I don't know whether this is true or not. The point is that Enoch was obedient to God and walked with Him daily. His live was an example of a life that pleased God. As a result he didn't die at that time like the rest of us have to do but was an example of being taken into heaven without physical death.

Here is what is written of him in the New Testament.

Hebrews 11:5

By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

We see here that faith was the ingredient that caused Enoch to be translated without death. Enoch pleased God. Enoch walked with God. He desired to walk with God.

Noah

Genesis 6

8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.

9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

Noah walked with God and as a result the whole human race was spared extinction.

Noah and his family were spared the destruction that came upon the whole world. By one man's obedience the human race continued upon the earth.

It pays to walk with God.

Here is what is said of Noah in the New Testament.

Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

We see here that walking with God and faith goes hand in hand. We do not see one without the other.

Noah was a preacher of righteousness. He warned and preached for years before the flood but his message fell on deaf ears. Yet he chose to identify with God and listen to him rather than seek the popularity of men. No doubt he was ridiculed and made fun of but he still chose to "walk with God."

Josiah

2 Kings 23

1 And the king sent, and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.

2 And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD.

3 And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.

Josiah makes a commitment to walk with God and do all that was written in the words of the covenant.

This determination was made and he determined to walk with the Lord. Josiah was one of the few Kings of Israel to take heed to the Word of God.

We can determine to do this too. How?

By studying the word of God diligently. We can't know how to live godly and obey the word if we do not know what the word says. Ignorance of the word is no excuse in this day of bibles in every store, hotel and living room.

I've heard that in places where the bible is scarce, they devour each word and even divide the bible among themselves if they do happen upon a copy of the Holy Word. If only we were as zealous to read and study the word, what an impact it would make on our society.

There are many more examples of men and women who chose to walk with the Lord: Daniel, Abraham, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, John, Peter, Stephen, Mary, Anna and many others. The bible is full of those who chose to walk with God.

A true Servant of God

Malachi 2

6 The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.

Here is a true servant of God. One who studies the word and determines to walk with God and shares that wisdom with others.

A true servant of God will want to turn others away from sin and bring them to God. This is something we cannot keep to ourselves. A good shepherd will feed the sheep. A person of truth who truly walks with God will care to tell that truth to others. He or she will not simply want to tell what others want to hear but will desire to tell truth whether or not the words fall on ears that will hear. A true person who loves and walks with God will be a person who tells the truth.

Lord help us to speak the truth in love, whether or not it wins us popularity. Help us to desire to please you instead of being pleasers of men.

Walking with God will be a normal thing in future kingdom of God

Micah 4

2 And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

3 And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

4 But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it.

5 For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever.

In the latter day when Jesus Christ comes to set up his kingdom, many will seek to walk with the Lord and seek His ways. They will travel far to hear the word and seek God.

We do not have to wait until that day comes. Now is the time to devour and seek the word of God. We will never be sorry we did. Let us hunger and thirst after the word like we do the finest food available. This is spiritual food that will cause wells of living water to spring up within us.

End results of Walking with God

Revelation 3

4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.

5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.

Here is the end result in choosing to obey and walk with God. Our names will never be blotted out of the book of life. Our name will be confessed before the Father in heaven and before the angels.

Walk with Him in white. We will be worthy because we denied the world, self and sin and chose rather to walk with God. Let us make that choice and commitment today. Begin to read and study the word now.
